2018 TLT Syposium

A few weeks ago, the PSU Ag Ed 2019 cohort was granted the privilege of attending the 2018 Teaching and Learning with Technology (TLT) Symposium hosted at the Penn Stater Hotel. During the symposium, workshops were conducted to explore various techniques and philosophies behind incorporating technology in the classroom.

Keynote speaker and Freakonomics Co-Author Stephen J. Dubner  had some very insightful words to share with us to kick off the day. During his speech, he revealed some of the lessons he learned over the years, and reflected on some of his most profound life experiences. He stressed the importance of thinking outside of the box, and adopting a forward-thinking mindset to become innovators. He even threw props to the agriculture industry, highlighting the development and innovation that made our food supply system what it is.

The first workshop I attended covered the effectiveness of incorporating technology appropriately in a blended style classroom. We were able to look at data that showed improvement in SRTE ratings when using an appropriately blended classroom, and how the overall quality of learning improved when technology was meaningfully incorporated into the collegiate classroom. My second workshop covered using artificial intelligence as a mediator between patients and hospital staff. AI technology exists that allows us to have a neutral 3rd party respond to external stigma in conversations. The idea is that artificial intelligence can be used as mediators in the classroom to improve classroom management and discussion.

TLT was an awesome opportunity to meaningfully engage with professionals who are dedicated to teaching and learning with technology. In addition to learning from these professionals, we were also able to spend the day sharpening our networking skills as we engaged with others at the symposium. Not to mention that I've also grown into quite a skilled Twitter-user!
